Answers to frequently asked questions about Fotra

Getting Started

What is Fotra?
Fotra is an iPad photo transfer app designed for professional photographers. Using your camera's FTP transfer feature, photos are sent directly to your iPad for real-time viewing on a large screen. It streamlines tethered shooting workflows for both studio and on-location work.
How do I get started?
1. Download Fotra from the App Store
2. Launch the app and start the FTP server
3. Enter the connection info displayed in Fotra into your camera's FTP settings
4. Connect your camera and iPad to the same Wi-Fi network
5. Start shooting - photos will automatically transfer to Fotra
What is tethered shooting mode?
Tethered shooting mode automatically displays new photos in full screen as they're received. This allows you to review shots on a large display instantly as you shoot, perfect for real-time sharing with clients or checking composition and exposure.

FTP Connection

I don't know how to configure my camera
Enter the "IP Address", "Port", "Username", and "Password" displayed on Fotra's server screen into your camera's FTP settings. A QR code display feature is also available - compatible cameras can scan it for quick setup. Please refer to your camera manufacturer's manual for detailed configuration steps.
I can't connect
Please check the following:
- Are your camera and iPad connected to the same Wi-Fi network?
- Are the FTP settings (IP address, port, username, password) correct?
- Is Fotra's FTP server running?
- Does your Wi-Fi router allow device-to-device communication? (Public Wi-Fi may block this)
Transfer speed is slow
Transfer speed depends on your Wi-Fi environment. Try using 5GHz Wi-Fi, moving closer to your router, and reducing other devices' Wi-Fi usage. If shooting JPEG+RAW, configuring your camera to transfer only JPEGs can also speed things up.

Compatible Devices

Which cameras are compatible?
Fotra works with cameras that have FTP transfer capability. Compatible models include: Canon EOS R5/R6/R3/1D X Mark III, Nikon Z9/Z8/Z6 III/D6, Sony a9 III/a1/a7R V/a7 IV, and more. Any camera with FTP transfer can be used, including models not listed.
What file formats are supported?
Fotra supports JPEG, HEIF, and RAW (major manufacturer formats). RAW files are displayed as previews.
What iOS version is required?
Fotra requires iOS 26 or later, and iPadOS 26 or later. It works on both iPhone and iPad.

Pricing & Purchase

Is Fotra free to use?
Yes, basic features are free. The Free plan limits photo viewing to 20 photos and has limited A/B comparison. For unlimited features, purchase the Pro Annual ($79.99/year) or Pro Monthly ($7.99/month) plan.
Which plan is best value?
For regular use of 10+ months, the annual plan offers the best value. For short-term projects or trying out the app, the monthly plan provides flexibility. The annual plan ($79.99/year) saves you the equivalent of 2 months compared to monthly billing.
Can I use Fotra on multiple devices?
Yes, you can use Fotra on any device signed in with the same Apple ID at no additional cost. Your purchase syncs automatically.
What happens if I cancel my subscription?
After cancellation, Pro features remain available until the next renewal date. After that, you'll revert to the Free plan, but your saved photos will remain accessible (view-only for photos beyond the 20 limit).

Other

Where are my photos stored?
Photos are stored within the app. You can also save to Camera Roll, share via AirDrop, or export to other apps. Automatic iCloud backup is not supported.
Do I need an internet connection?
A Wi-Fi connection is required for photo transfer, but internet access is not needed. As long as your camera and iPad are on the same local network (Wi-Fi), Fotra works offline.
