Answers to frequently asked questions about Fotra

Getting Started

What is Fotra?
Fotra is an iPad photo transfer app designed for professional photographers. Using your camera's FTP transfer feature, photos are sent directly to your iPad for real-time viewing on a large screen. It streamlines tethered shooting workflows for both studio and on-location work. Fotra is a rebrand of the app formerly known as "Tezar", with added features and improvements.
How do I get started?
1. Download Fotra from the App Store
2. Launch the app
3. Configure FTP server settings (username, password, etc.)
4. Start the FTP server
5. Enter the connection info displayed in Fotra into your camera's FTP settings
6. Connect your camera and iPad to the same Wi-Fi network
7. Start shooting - photos will automatically transfer to Fotra
What is tethered shooting mode?
Tethered shooting mode automatically displays new photos in full screen as they're received. This allows you to review shots on a large display instantly as you shoot, perfect for real-time sharing with clients or checking composition and exposure.

FTP Connection

I don't know how to configure my camera
Enter the "IP Address", "Port", "Username", and "Password" displayed on Fotra's server screen into your camera's FTP settings. A QR code display feature is also available - compatible cameras can scan it for quick setup. For camera-side FTP configuration, please refer to your camera manufacturer's manual or support website. Please note that Fotra is unable to provide individual support for camera-specific connection methods.
I can't connect
Please check the following:
- Are your camera and iPad connected to the same Wi-Fi network?
- Are the FTP settings (IP address, port, username, password) correct?
- Is Fotra's FTP server running?
- Does your Wi-Fi router allow device-to-device communication? (Public Wi-Fi may block this)

If the issue persists, please also check your camera manufacturer's manual or support website. Please note that Fotra is unable to provide individual support for camera-specific connection methods.
Transfer speed is slow
Transfer speed depends on your Wi-Fi environment. Try using 5GHz Wi-Fi, moving closer to your router, and reducing other devices' Wi-Fi usage. If shooting JPEG+RAW, configuring your camera to transfer only JPEGs can also speed things up.

Compatible Devices

Which cameras are compatible?
Fotra works with cameras that have FTP transfer capability. Compatible models include: Canon EOS R5/R6/R3/1D X Mark III, Nikon Z9/Z8/Z6 III/D6, Sony a9 III/a1/a7R V/a7 IV, and more. Any camera with FTP transfer can be used, including models not listed.
What file formats are supported?
Fotra supports JPEG, HEIF, and RAW (major manufacturer formats). RAW files are displayed as previews.
What iOS version is required?
Fotra requires iOS 26 or later, and iPadOS 26 or later. It works on both iPhone and iPad.

Pricing & Purchase

Is Fotra free to use?
Yes, the FTP server and tethered shooting basic features are free. With the Free plan, photo viewer, thumbnails, histogram, grid view, and A/B Compare are limited (up to 20 photos, blurred beyond). Auto-save to Photos and share features are not available. For unlimited access to all features, subscribe to the Pro Annual ($119.99/year) or Pro Monthly ($12.99/month) plan.
Which plan is the best value?
For 10+ months of use, the Pro Annual plan ($119.99/year, ~$10.00/month) offers the best value. For short-term projects or trying out the app, the Pro Monthly plan ($12.99/month) offers more flexibility. The annual plan saves you the equivalent of about 3 months compared to monthly billing. Both are subscriptions that can be cancelled anytime.
Can I use Fotra on multiple devices?
Yes, you can use Fotra on any device signed in with the same Apple ID at no additional cost. Your purchase syncs automatically.
What happens if I cancel my subscription?
After cancellation, all features remain available until the next renewal date. After that, you'll revert to the Free plan, but your saved photos will remain accessible (view-only for photos beyond the 20 limit).

Auto Add to Photos

What is Auto Add to Photos?
Auto Add to Photos automatically saves received photos to the iOS Photos app. This feature is available with the Pro Annual and Pro Monthly plans. You can enable or disable it from the Settings screen. This is useful for backing up your photos or accessing them from other apps.
Does Auto Add to Photos work with iCloud?
Yes. Since photos are saved to the iOS Photos app, if you have iCloud Photos enabled on your device, they will automatically sync to iCloud as well. This provides a seamless cloud backup of your transferred photos.
What formats are auto-saved to Photos?
Auto Add to Photos supports a wide range of formats including JPEG, HEIF, PNG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, and RAW files. However, some formats or camera-specific RAW files may not be read correctly.

Features

How does the histogram work?
Fotra provides a histogram overlay with 6 display modes: Colors, Composite, R, G, B, and Luminance. Tap the histogram to cycle through modes, and drag it to reposition anywhere on the screen.
Can I customize composition guides?
Yes. Fotra offers 3 composition guide types: Rule of Thirds, Rule of Quarters, and Diagonal. You can customize the line width from 0.5pt to 5pt and change the line color to suit your preference.
How does A/B Compare work?
Long-press a thumbnail to set it as the A image for comparison. You can then view both A and B images side by side, and switch between horizontal and vertical layouts for flexible comparison.
Can I access my photos from a Mac/PC?
Yes. Connect your iPad to a Mac or PC via USB and open Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows). Navigate to the Fotra folder under the device's Files section to access, copy, or back up your photos directly.
What is Keep Zoom?
Keep Zoom is a setting that preserves your current zoom level and position when navigating to the next or previous photo. This is particularly useful when reviewing fine details across multiple shots at the same zoom level.

Other

Where are my photos stored?
Photos are stored within the app. You can also save to Camera Roll, share via AirDrop, or export to other apps. With the Auto Add to Photos feature (Pro plan), received photos are automatically saved to the iOS Photos app. If iCloud Photos is enabled on your device, they will also be backed up to iCloud.
Do I need an internet connection?
A Wi-Fi connection is required for photo transfer, but internet access is not needed. As long as your camera and iPad are on the same local network (Wi-Fi), Fotra works offline.
